Oils For Emotions
Did you know that you can use essential oils for emotions? As hippie woo woo as it sounds- don’t knock using essential oils for emotions until you try it!
The smell-emotion connection starts in the limbic system, often referred to as the “emotional brain”.
This portion of the brain contains the hippocampus, amygdala, hypothalamus and thalamus. It handles emotional response, anger, fear, libido, hormone function, behavior, motivation, long and short-term memory, sleep patterns, reproduction, and… sense of smell.
Because of this our emotions can affect SO MANY things in our lives. When you breathe in an essential oil, molecules enter the limbic system and elicit an emotional response. The exact details of how smells impact emotions are difficult to define BUT we do know that smell absolutely DOES illicit an emotional response.
An aversion to a particular oil may indicate something more than just personal preference. It could actually be stirring an unpleasant emotional response. Conversely, oils that bring about positive emotions are likely favored.
This is because aromas actually have an effect on your brain waves affecting your emotions.
You might feel many pressures in life as a mom, a dad, a provider, a woman, a wife, a husband etc.
To keep up with the responsibilities and the jobs that come along with each can really start to send your emotions spiraling out of control in certain seasons. But thankfully we have some really incredible tools and resources for you so you don’t have to constantly live with feelings of entrapment!
We have oils that can bring support and balance into the emotions, that can support the brain and calm it’s reactions, that can support the hormones and level out highs and lows, and we can use in moments of change, stress, lows, highs, etc.
You’ll find below a great list that are go-to’s for supporting your body in these moments. Use them often and consistently!

+Frankincense
Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) was once regarded as more valuable than gold in ancient cultures. It was in recipes God gave to his people for cleansing and worship. Why? Because He understands us as physical beings. That we are a whole: body, mind, and spirit, and that we need help bringing that all together into a cohesive focus. Frankincense has been used to ground and focus the mind during times of prayer and mental strain or grief.
Frankincense also has a similar effect inside the body, encouraging the cells and functions to come back to their foundations. To help the body to remember what it does and why it does it. What should it be protecting? What should it be removing? How should it be functioning? Where should the garbage go? Frankincense quietly asks our systems all the right questions and then supports them in doing their job well. Just as it’s best to surround ourselves daily with those who are wise, it’s also good to give ourselves frequent exposure to this ancient, revered oil. Who doesn’t need a daily dose of calming, grounded influence?!
