Why You Should Be Using Essential Oils

By now you all know that I absolutely love my Young Living essential oils & use them all day, everyday- for just about everything.

Our entire family has fallen in love with using essential oils, all because I simply started using them as a way to replace my candles and cleaning products. But they have done so much more than that!

So many of you have sent me questions(which I love!) about how they work or how you can work them into your routine, so I thought I would put a post together for you, about how you can and why you should be using essential oils!

For a better night’s sleep. There is a reason that every baby product on the planet contains lavender. Hello, sweet dreams! There are SO many oils that can be worked into a bedtime routine to encourage a healthy night of sleep, I don’t know where we would be without them!

For healthy, glowing skin. I have used all sorts of moisturizers, eye creams and serums that promised to make my skin better. I have liked a ton of stuff but nothing that I really loved, until essential oils came along.

Each night I use my favorite Glow Serum which is:

15 drops Frankincense,

15 drops Tea Tree

10 drops Lavender

10 drops Copaiba

Fill 3/4 bottle with Jojoba Oil as the carrier and fill the remaining with witch hazel!

It has done wonders for my skin & I absolutely love the way it smells!

For an extra punch, I also love to roll Lavender under my puffy eyes and apply Copiaba or Tea Tree the instant I see blemishes.

Frankincense by itself could also act as my moisturizer; it supports healthy, glowing skin without the chemicals, plus as an incredibly grounding, calming oil, it is amazing to apply to skin right before going to sleep!

You can also use Lavender Oil + Castor Oil on lashes to help promote crazy growth, and a lip scrub (equal parts white sugar + coconut oil with 10-15 drops of peppermint essential oil) every few days as an exfoliator for lips.

For immune support. If you have little ones (especially ones in daycare, preschool, etc.), you need this! Adding oils to our daily routine has been life changing! Every mom needs this. I made our very own Stay Well roller blend, and we use it daily!

To make our home smell amazing. After reading about how toxic it is to burn candles, we have turned to diffusing oils instead. The best part? They have added benefits! So while Wintergreen + Orange in the diffuser smells amazing (like sweetheart candy!), it is also uplifting & mood boosting!

Blends like Lavender + Stress Away (vanilla-lime) smell heavenly, especially when diffused at bed time, they are also highly relaxing & calming. Diffusing oils are also great ways to support the body for things like immune support and emotional support! A few of my favorite diffuser blends for spring are Citrus Fresh + Grapefruit, Geranium + Tangerine, Stress Away + Tangerine, or Lavender + Lemon + Peppermint!

For chemical free cleaning. I have always hated traditional cleaning supplies; the smells are always so overwhelming & they are a hazard to keep under your sink or around your kids. The Young Living line of cleaning products, specifically Thieves Cleaner, is 100% effective, all natural, and safe around kids. I am safe to wipe down high chairs or play tables with it! There are hundreds of ways to use oils themselves for cleaning as well, like using lemon oil to remove sticky residue (like in an instant, it’s incredible), or lemon + thieves oil with some baking soda to make an amazing soft scrub to get stains out of sinks, pans, etc.

We use Thieves Cleaner + Lemon essential oil for almost all of the cleaning in our home. Thieves cleaner is a concentrated cleaner that we add a capful of to a 16 oz. spray bottle and use for all of our kitchen & bathroom surfaces, and it has replaced all of the other surface and glass cleaners in our home!

For balanced moods + emotional support. The science behind it is simple. Essential oils are extracted from plants by distillation and have the essential aromatic & chemical properties of that plant; they are made up of tiny molecules that are very easily absorbed by our bodies. When you inhale an essential oil, receptor cells of the olfactory organ receive the aroma and send signals to the brain which is the center of our emotions & memory. This controls our blood pressure, breathing, hormone balance, heart rate & so much more. So simply inhaling certain oils, or applying oils to your wrists or behind your ears, can be extremely calming, uplifting & grounding.

One of my favorite blends I call “Happy” (made up of Joy, Orange, & Peace and Calming) is one we love for any emotionally draining time, perhaps every day during witching hour or on every road trip with kids, and is amazing for things like postpartum emotions.

For all the best DIYs. Grapefruit lip scrub, hair detangler, muscle cream, outdoor spray, you name it, there’s an oil for that! It never fails that on any given day, I am googling things & finding an oily solution. Dry cuticles? Done. Ants on the porch? Done.

Keep your flowers fresh with 1-2 drops of Purification in your vase of water. Add a drop of Purification to a cotton ball to get rid of odors (in bottom of trash can, diaper pails, shoe closet, etc.). Add a few drops of Lavender(or Gentle Baby or Citrus Fresh or Purification… you get the idea!) to wool dryer balls in place of dryer sheets to keep laundry fresh & smelling amazing. And a few drops of Peppermint + Lavender added to a small spray bottle with water + a splash of witch hazel will help keep all the ants away when eating on your patio.

It is an amazing feeling to have a safe, natural (and easy!) way solve problems.

For flavor + added benefits. Young Living essential oils are all 100% therapeutic grade, and the vitality line of oils (the white labels you see on some of the oils) can be used to naturally flavor food & drinks! I love a drop of peppermint in my morning water, lime or grapefruit in sparkling water, and basil or rosemary in olive oil when cooking! A drop of lemon oil is more potent & has more benefits since it is produced from the rind of the lemon instead of the pulp. One drop in your water each morning acts as a powerful antioxidant + stimulates metabolism, without the acidity that can upset a sensitive stomach or damage your enamel on your teeth. Incredible, right?!

So now that you know all the reasons why I love essential oils and why you will too, I’m sure your next question is, “Well, how do I even start? Where do I even begin?” Check out this post RIGHT HERE

    1. Hey Trisha! Do you have and use oils regularly? If so, awesome! 🙂 For 18 months I would do something like 1 drop of Thieves and 1 drop of Lemon topped with carrier oil in a 10ml roller on the feet! (you could roll it on his spine too)

      I hope that helps!
