Our 2nd Grade Homeschool Curriculum

We are currently in our fourth year of homeschooling Miss Abigail. We have worked our way through Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st grade, and now 2nd!

Each year we have done something different, which, to be honest- I kind of like! I love the flexibility that homeschooling provides. The ability to adjust and change whatever needs to be changed. Nothing is permanent, unless you want it to be.

I know a lot of people are curious about homeschooling, so I thought I would share what 2nd grade homeschool curriculum we are using this year for Abigail and a bit of what our school days look like.

We don’t have an official school room, so almost all of our school work is done at the dining room table. Of course, there is plenty of school that is done at the park, in the car, and the backyard too….but if it’s work sheets or lessons, the dining room table it is!

We are part of a local home school group called Classical Conversations. We did this for the first time last year and have returned for a second year. It is a Classical style of education- which I love- and, for now, focuses on memorization for these foundational years of Abigail’s education.

For Classical Conversations(CC), we attend every Monday from 9-1. They cover the entire week’s worth of information, and then depending on the week, have music, art, or science projects, along with the chance to have lunch and recess with their friends.

The rest of the week we have school at home, reviewing all of the work we have learned from CC so far.

At Abigail’s age, CC provides all of the curriculum needed other than math and language arts. It’s up to you as the teacher to choose the curriculum that suits your family best and fill in the gaps. It is also up to you to decide how much additional information to delve into from your week at CC- they memorize a TON of facts, but you can opt to learn even more about those facts at home on your own time.

With this year being our first year with the state requirement to log hours (in Missouri, once your child turns 7, you are required to log 1,000 hours- 600 core, 400 non core for the school year. No one ever looks at or checks up on this, but in the event of someone questioning your ability to home school or teach your child, it’s good to have the documents/proof that you’re doing what is required of you by your state) we have added a bit more planning and structure to our days than in previous years.

Our Second Grade Homeschool Curriculum:

Start day at 7:30am

Get ready and have breakfast

Start school at 9:00

Math goes first!

Then I let Abigail choose her other subject order

We finish around lunch time/noon

I read(or the Grandmas!) read during lunch time

Nap at 1 for Mabel

During nap if there is anything we need to catch up on or work on further, we do it at this time. Otherwise, Abigail has some quiet time herself where she can read or do art.

And that’s basically our school day.

(I’ve found that school goes the best if we get it all done before lunch time- we usually choose to just double up the next morning rather than work into the afternoon, but sometimes afternoon school is necessary.)

CC has been really amazing. Abigail is fantastic at memorizing and remembering things, so watching her excel at CC has been so much fun. I’m learning lots too, so that’s always a good time 🙂

As far as our other 2nd grade homeschool curriculum goes, this is what we are using this year:

Horizons Math

Plaid Phonics

Language Lessons

Cursive

Story Of The World

Mickey Typing

Read Aloud- some of our favorites, here, here, and here.

Spanish App (she has been working on this in the evenings with Jim!)

CC Review Every Day

And so far it is going really well! We didn’t have to take any time off with Finn’s arrival(thanks, Grammy!) and we are on track to be completely done with our 2nd grade homeschool curriculum by the beginning of May or so!

  1. I don’t know how you moms do it, because as for me, patience is one thing I lack, therefore would not be a good teacher.
    Kudos to you homeschooling

  2. Great job! Looks like you’ve got a good thing going! Do you and the little ones go to CC with Abigail or do you drop her off? I always love that you recognize the learning opportunities all day all around you – the park, the mall, the backyard – there are so many fun things to learn about with kids. Olive was thrilled to learn about leaf collecting, the fine art of tic tac toe and how giving compliments make people smile this week 🙂
