Homemade Playdoh

I thought I’d share my recipe for homemade playdoh today! My awesome Aunt Libby hooked me up with this. It’s super easy and cheap to make.

It does leave your hands feeling a bit grimier than regular playdoh and it doesn’t smell the same(am I the only weirdo who loves the smell of playdoh??) but those are my only two complaints about it.

The Recipe:

makes about 2.5 Cups(It has stayed fresh and has lasted a super long time. It is plenty to play with)

  • 1.5 cups of flour
  • 3/4 cups of salt
  • 1.5 cups of water
  • 1 TB vegetable oil
  • 1/2 TB cream of tartar
  • food coloring- the liquid kind
Mix all of the ingredients into a saucepan. Add the food coloring to your liking. Children can help with this step!

Adults only –

Set your stove top to medium-low (about a 2.5 on a glass top stove). Stand by the pan and stir occasionally. When the batter look is gone and the ingredients start staying together when you stir (5-8 minutes), remove the pan from the heat. Lay out some wax paper and scoop play dough onto the wax paper. I can usually start kneading right away, but make sure that you check the dough for heat – you don’t want to burn yourself!

Once the dough has been kneaded into a nice texture, place in an airtight container or zip lock. The snack sized zip locks work beautifully.

Abigail has really loved playing with this! We get some plastic cookie cutters out and she goes to town. She loves when I roll it up into a ball and will shout “bawl, bawl!!” or I’ll roll it into a rope and we’ll pretend it’s a snake and she’ll say, “sss, sss!” So much fun.

We’ve had pretty good luck so far with her not trying to consume all of it. She’s only taken a lick here or there a couple times and I think she’s pretty convinced it’s not something she really feels like eating.

Before I was a parent to my own awesome kid, I would have told you it was near impossible to take close to 100 pictures of someone playing with playdoh. But, I would have been wrong. Here’s the highlight reel:

I love this little girl so much! We have so much fun together. Now, to decide what color to make next…….
