How to Paint Shutters Tutorial
Freshening up your curb appeal is quick & easy! Check out this post for how to paint shutters to see just how simple it actually is!
Recently, Abigail and I were talking a walk through our neighborhood and I noticed a house with shutters. I thought to myself, “Goodness. Those shutters are SO faded. They really should do something about them.” And on and on and on I thought to myself.
Then, the more I thought about it the more I realized “Ya know. Our house faces the same direction their house does. And the sun shines on the front of our house all day. I wonder if my shutters look as faded too?”
Answer? YES. Oh my goodness, yes. They’re super faded. Probably even worse than the original house that made me think about it in the first place.
First, I looked into replacing the shutters themselves. But, for $30 for two shutters I wondered if there wasn’t a cheaper way to freshen things up.
So, naturally, I checked out Pinterest. I didn’t really find much in the way of step-by-step instructions on how to paint shutters, but I did find some fun color inspiration and decided to try and paint them instead of replacing them completely.
After agonizing over what color to choose for a few weeks I finally pulled the trigger on a dark gray, color place(cheap Walmart brand-$20 for a gallon), exterior satin paint.
This ended up being a super cheap and easy project and I wish I had done it a long time(read: years) ago.
First, I had Jim unscrew them from the brick for me.
Then, we hosed them off and I scrubbed them down with steel wool and warm soapy water. We left them in the sun to dry.
Yes, my garage is totally filthy in this picture. We were doing a bunch of projects that particular weekend. Jim has cleaned it all out since and it looks beautiful again.
They only took one coat to be completely covered and look brand new. They dried for an afternoon and then were ready to be hung back up!
How to Paint Shutters:
Of course, since I changed the color of the shutters that meant I also had to paint our front door. It took a little longer than the shutters because it needed two coats to finish, but after 2 days it was ready to go too!

That looks sooo good! This is also on outdoor to do list with about 800 other things.
Thank you! Yeah, we've lived in this house for 5 years and we're just not getting around to updating things on the outside of the house.
I also painted our house numbers to spruce them up but I didn't want creepers to see too much of our place 😉
Just now* 🙂
What color is your front door? Need to repaint mine and love your look!
What color is your front door? Love it!
That looks great! I really need to get a new wreath up.
Thanks! I'd really had the itch to make one for a while- this one was super fast to make. No tiny flowers to wrap!
Looks so good! And I may have to make a we rat JUST like that! 🙂
Thank you! And YES, doooo it! It was so fast and easy to make.
Found you through Pinterest! I just finished painting our front door, and have been contemplating whether or not I want to paint our shutters or just buy new ones. They are hunter green and I want them brick red, like the color I just painted our door. So, I'm sure it's just silly to prime them and paint them, huh? 😉
If you have leftover paint from your front door I definitely say give it a try painting them first! If you're just going to buy new ones anyway what can it hurt?
Have you checked out your local stores to make sure they have the color you are wanting? It seemed like our options were pretty scarce, so you may want to paint them to get the exact shade to match your door anyway.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
Ok so like I said I am getting all sorts of caught up on your blog. I want to paint our front door. How did you do it? Did you take it off, tape it off, how did you clean it? Did you use a roller or brush?!!
It was so stinking easy.
I just opened the door{So choose a pretty day to do it!}, only taped around the glass, and I used a regular paint brush.
Jim hosed it down for me really well before I painted and I made sure to wipe it down and let it dry completely first.
I did two coats, so it took me two afternoon naptimes to do it. I just left the door cracked until it dried and then it was ready to go! Super fast and easy.
these are fabulous! pinning this because we want to paint our shutters next year 🙂
It is Walmart color place exterior paint in satin finish. The color is called "dark coalmine". if I remember right, it was the darkest gray color option they had.
Have you had any issues with that fabulous color fading?
What color is your front door? Love it!!
